The Present Subjunctive (Presente de Subjuntivo) is a fundamental mood in Spanish used to express subjectivity, uncertainty, desires, doubts, emotions, recommendations, and non-factual statements. Unlike the indicative mood (which states facts), the subjunctive reflects the speaker's perspective or attitude towards an action or state.
When to Use the Spanish Present Subjunctive (WEIRDO)
The subjunctive is typically triggered by certain verbs, conjunctions, or impersonal expressions in the main clause of a sentence that indicate subjectivity. A common acronym to remember the main uses is WEIRDO:
(Verbs like querer, desear, esperar, preferir, necesitar)
(Verbs/expressions like alegrarse de, sentir, temer, gustar, encantar, sorprender, tener miedo de)
Me alegro de que estés aquí. (I'm happy that you are here.)
Siento que no puedas venir. (I'm sorry that you can't come.)
Temo que llueva mañana. (I fear it will rain tomorrow.)
(Expressions like es importante que, es necesario que, es bueno/malo que, es posible/probable que, es una lástima que)
Es importante que estudies mucho. (It's important that you study a lot.)
Es necesario que hagamos la tarea. (It's necessary that we do the homework.)
Es posible que lleguen tarde. (It's possible that they will arrive late.)
Note: If the impersonal expression states certainty (e.g., es verdad que, es cierto que, es obvio que), the indicative is used.
(Verbs like recomendar, sugerir, pedir, mandar, prohibir, aconsejar, decir [when commanding])
Te recomiendo que leas este libro. (I recommend that you read this book.)
El médico sugiere que descanse. (The doctor suggests that he/she rest.)
Te pido que me escuches. (I ask you to listen to me.)
Prohíben que fumes aquí.
(They prohibit smoking here / They prohibit you from smoking here.)
(Verbs/expressions like dudar, no creer, no pensar, no estar seguro/a de, negar)
Dudo que sea verdad. (I doubt it's true.)
No creo que vengan hoy. (I don't believe they are coming today.)
Niego que él tenga razón. (I deny that he is right.)
Note: Affirmative belief/certainty (creer que, pensar que, estar seguro de que) uses the indicative.
The expression ojalá (que) always triggers the subjunctive.
¡Ojalá (que) haga buen tiempo! (I hope / Hopefully the weather is good!)
Ojalá (que) ganemos el partido. (I wish / Hopefully we win the game.)
Certain conjunctions require the subjunctive when the outcome is uncertain or hypothetical (e.g., antes de que, para que, a menos que, con tal de que, sin que).
Forming the present subjunctive involves three steps:
(Yo hablo → habl-)
(Yo como → com-)
yo: coma
tú: comas
él/ella/usted: coma
nosotros/as: comamos
vosotros/as: comáis
ellos/ellas/ustedes: coman
(Yo vivo → viv-)
Irregularities in the present subjunctive often stem from irregularities in the present indicative yo form or stem changes.
If the yo form is irregular, that irregularity carries over to the subjunctive.
Others include: poner (ponga), salir (salga), traer (traiga), decir (diga), venir (venga), oír (oiga), conducir (conduzca), etc.
Stem-changing verbs (-ar, -er) follow their indicative stem change patterns in the subjunctive, except that nosotros/vosotros forms ALSO sometimes change.
To maintain pronunciation, verbs ending in -car, -gar, -zar undergo spelling changes before the subjunctive 'e' ending.
Six common verbs have highly irregular subjunctive forms that must be memorized. A common acronym is DISHES:
(Note accents on yo/él forms)
(Note accents on all but nosotros)
Forgetting to use the subjunctive after WEIRDO triggers is common.
Correct: Quiero que vengas.
Correct: Es importante que estudies.
Remember -ar verbs take -e endings, and -er/-ir verbs take -a endings.
Correct: Espero que hable español.
Correct: Dudo que coma carne.
The DISHES verbs and irregular yo forms must be memorized.
Correct: Ojalá que yo sepa la respuesta.
Correct: Es bueno que des regalos.
Remember the special stem changes for -ir verbs in nosotros/vosotros.
Incorrect: Preferimos que duermamos más. (o→ue change doesn't apply to nosotros)
Correct: Preferimos que durmamos más. (o→u change applies)
Incorrect: Es triste que sentimos así. (e→ie change doesn't apply to nosotros)
Correct: Es triste que sintamos así. (e→i change applies)
